Excerpt from The French Student's Manual, or Colloquial and Grammatical Exercises: Intended to Impart to the Student Both a Theoretical and Practical Knowledge of the French Language Towanns the end of the last century, when France became a prey to anarchy, many of her best citizens were complled to seek a refuge in foreign countries; and, having lost all their possessions, they endeavoured to earn an honest living by becoming teachers of the French language. The tremendous convulsions which agitated their native land, in her passage from despotism to com parative liberty, the wonderful achievements of the man who com manded the admiration and fear of the civilized world, and the flood of light which then began to pour from France over the whole scientific world, all tended to render a knowledge of her language indispensable to the well-educated of both Europe and America. Since that period, it has been more and more admired for its justness, purity, accuracy, and flexibility; and the demand for it has increased, especially in this country. Although the commercial relations existing between the United States and South America seem to render a knowledge of the Spanish language almost indispensable to our youth; yet it is comparatively neglect ed, while the French is extensively studied, from the fact that it has become universal and that an individual who is conversant with it, and with the English, may visit any portion of the civilized world, with the certainty of but seldom requiring an interpreter. The truth of this is so generally felt, that there can scarcely be found, in our widely spread republic, a school of any classical pre tensions ia which the French is not taught, or attempted to be taught.
