A rousing historical sea story, though perhaps less so for readers unwilling to plumb the depths of 19th nautical jargon (recommended reading: The Young Sea Officer's Sheet Anchor). Nelson is in his element when afloat, but when ashore his story falters and his characters become wooden and their dialogue hackneyed and conventional. Fans of Patrick O'Brian, however, will be entertained by the accounts of shipboard life and battles at sea.
