There is reason to believe that the great change of the Jewish Sabbath to the first day of the week, our Sunday, was first made known to the Essenes and kept as a profound secret, until the ritual of the Temple was ended, and the world was prepared for an apparent deviation from the law of Sinai which had hallowed the seventh day for more than fifteen centuries. We do know that for three hundred years, the Eucharist was administered with closed doors aa a secret rite, not to be profaned by the curiosity of spectators. The Essenes from their.abstemious diet and mental discipline lived to a great age. Beyond doubt some of them saw the Star In The East and rejoiced with exceeding joy; and there were some of them at Jerusalem, Galilee, and the sea of Tiberias, who hod looked upon the face of our Saviour;--who heard that voice PORTSMOUTH ADDRESS. 17 which spake as never man spake, when he went up into a mountain and uttered the Beatitudes;--who were eye-witnesses of his sufferings when he was buffeted, scourged and spit upon and led forth to the Crucifixion; and who watched and wept when they saw his blessed hands nailed to the Cross, and that Cross lifted np on Calvary, where he hung between two thieves, as the crowded population of Jerusalenf gazed upon him and reviled him. It must have been a spectacle, which filled Ihe minds of the faithful with a horror of great darknets; for if we regard the Just OiJic only as a man, he was the most perfect, innocent, suffering being that ever was upon earth.
