Myth vs. Reality
A myth that refuses to die, the story of Frank Finkel continues to survive the rigors of time. First revealed in 1930 Finkel's supposed escape from the Custer battlefield is still believed by a number of people. But the reality is far different. Finkel gave a number of conflicting accounts of his supposed service in the 7th U.S. Cavalry and escape from Custer's doomed command. No records exist that support the tale. In the long run Finkel was but one of some 200 false claims surrounding the battle at the turn of the twentieth century. Kuhlman's belief and support of the tale helped push it to the front in 'sole survivor' tales. A true novelty item and oddity it still is a very desirable book for any Custer library. Not to be taken seriously but a fun read by one of the great frauds in western history.
