They think from the eye and cannot think from the understanding. Thought from the eye closes up the understanding, but thought from the understanding opens the eye." 4 In tracing back the sequences of life from the highly organised, through the simpler forms, to the most elemental, it appears as if we were following life to its source; but it is like chasing the will-o'-the-wisp. If we assume that the mysterious powers that we see in nature are derived from the sun, we have still to account for the activities in the sun itself. The light and heat of the sun are mediate causes, but at the back of them are the spiritual forces that permeate all forms of matter. We see, then, spiritual forces acting through material forces to produce the forms of life and use by which we are surrounded.
