Again, let E D C F denote the displacement by the model No. 2; and if the point H be equidistant from the points E C and D F in the parallelogram E D C F, it is in the centre of that parallelogram; therefore H is the centre of displacement, which is f of an inch below the centre of gravity of the model. Next, take the example of a yacht, and, for argument sake, let the form of the midship section be as this diagram, A B c D, having E F the line of the water level; therefore the parallelogram E D C F being under the level of the water, represents the displacement. Let the point H, by the means of ballast, be the centre of gravity of the yacht, and admitting it to be equidistant from the points E C and D F, it i3 likewise the centre of displacement, and these two centres do in this instance exactly coincide. Experiments Made To Ascertain The Situation Of The Long Axis Of A Ship Around Which It Oscillates Or Rolls. No. 1 model is of deal, and solid. No. 2 is also of deal, and hollowed out, having lead fixed on the bottom No. l. to reduce the centre of gravity down to a low point. The diagrams at the sides are the midship sections.
