In end-construction manufacture, especially where porous material is employed, the forms are simpler and the laminations in the clay do not affect the strength to any such extent as occurs in the side-construction. In end-construction blocks the buckling of the lamina is prevented by the next layers above and below, and also by the partitions. This is not the case in the side-construction method. In end-construction all the body of the arch above the neutral axis is carrying a portion of the load, while in the side-construction the horizontal members only are in direct service. This tends to produce a horizontal shearing in the lamina. Comparison in Effectiveness.--It has been shown that, in the side-construction arch, the voids run parallel to the supporting beams. This reduces the effective arch area to the horizontal webs and partitions, as the vertical webs can serve only as sides or abutting members to the individual blocks, and as struts to prevent buckling. It has also been pointed out in Chapter IV, and in previous paragraphs, that the side-construction skewback usually constitutes the weakest place in the arch, and failure is very apt to occur at this point either by the crushing or shearing of the skew. In the " Lee " arch, made for test at the Equitable Building, Denver, in 1890, the blocks, for the first time in terracotta arch construction, were made according to the endmethod, and these and nearly all later tests have shown the superiority of this form. Continuous walls of material are utilized for both the vertical and horizontal webs and partitions, and all of the material performs useful work as an...
