Burgundy cloth, clean with a few very small white scratches, gilt titled; corners and spine ends rubbed; upper front corner is scuffed with cloth torn less than a half inch. Sewn binding tight and solid. Occasional page with small marks to mark text, in margin, otherwise pages very clean. Laid in copy of remarks about the book by Prof Donald Treadgold, Dept of History, dated 14 June 1961: Eleven wide-ranging papers presented between 1914 and 1959 by America's best scholar on the origins of the war of 1914 show his Thucydidean penetration of this revolutionary century, many sage observations on history, and zest for his profession: " If I were a young man looking for a professional career, I would ask for nothing better than to be as historian."
