As princes of the French house they always retained a measure of respect for its senior branch, and it is interesting to examine in this regard the reigns of John the Fearless and Philip the Good. External circumstances precipitated the separation of Philip from the French royal house, and the unexpected death of Charles the Bold cut short a process which was well on the way to fruition.
