Excerpt from The Encyclopedia of Practical Horticulture, Vol. 2: A Reference System of Commercial Horticulture, Covering the Practical and Scientific Phases of Horticulture With Special Reference to Fruits and Vegetables In the Rocky mountain and Alleghany mountain regions it is conceded that a rich loam, with a clay subsoil, is better for most varieties, while for some, a sandy loam is best. Generally, a good corn and potato soil, is good for small fruits. However, for certain kinds of fruits, especially raspberries, a north slope is better than a south slope because they reach a higher development, where the sun is not too hot. A considerable de gree of humidity in the atmosphere is also favorable. The roots of small fruits do not extend so deeply into the ground as the roots of the larger trees like apples and pears, therefore require more moisture near the surface of the soil, and are more quickly affected by drouth.
