This book's strength is in its history of the movement during the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries. Haskell's account of the early seminal figures, ensembles and trends is impressively thorough and well-documented, and draws on a wide array of popular primary sources. In this respect, the book remains today the most informative historical source on the Early Music Movement. Later in the book, his tone changes from historic to polemic, and particularly during the final two chapters, it feels as though he is one-sidedly repeating ideas of the Movement's critics rather than appraising them himself. But, bearing in mind that was writing in the context of the prevalent and heavily-mediatized debates of the 1980s, one can read these chapters as a a kind of primary source - as a useful catalogue of the claims and stakes of those debates.
