This novel and its companion work, The Hash Knife Outfit, need to be read together to get the full effect of what Zane Grey was trying to depict. Be sure to read this one first. This is another Tonto Basin story, based in fact, told with the excitement and language inflections only Zane Grey could tell. The embodiment of the story is this: Jim Traft had never been west. He didn't know cattle. But his uncle makes him foreman of the Diamond ranch. Molly Dunn, the sister of the fastest gunfighter in the Tonto, Slinger Dunn, who by the way, threatens to hang Jim Traft's hide on the drift fence being built, falls in love with Jim. This is their story, of how Jim Traft earned the respect of his cowboys, fought to save the ranch from rustlers, and win Molly Dunn. I highly recommend it.
