This chilling TV movie is a prequel to Rose Red, a 2002 horror miniseries for ABC-TV written by Stephen King. Based on a book by Ridley Pearson, who used Joyce Reardon, a character from the miniseries, as a pen name for the book, The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer tells the tragic, frightening tale of Ellen, a woman who married a wealthy industrialist named John Rimbauer. Even on their long honeymoon, Ellen soon realizes that John is not who she thought he was. When they return home, she is delighted to find that he built a beautiful mansion, Rose Red, just for her. Over the years, as their marriage deteriorates, Ellen has the house as solace for the fact that her husband is selfish, controlling, and unfaithful. But she soon realizes that the house is also home to something else, terrifying presences that might be evil. And she welcomes it when a medium conducts a seance and convinces her that she should continue to build onto the house. Since The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer was broadcast a year after Rose Red, it is obviously a sequel, but this creepy period peace is also a prequel that explains the hauntings and some of the secrets that plagued Rose Red for decades after its construction. Directed by the same director who did a superb job of directing Rose Red and an earlier Stephen King miniseries, Storm of the Century, it is a powerful, frightful nightmare that will keep you enthralled and spooked till the very end! And if you like the movie, I also recommend the book!
