Queen Liliu'okalani had to bear many things in her life, but surmounted them all. She loved her unfaithful husband, she supported her brother Kalakaua in public though they disagreed privately, she coped with the loss of almost all of her family, and in order to defend the rights of her people, she endured revolution which brought the loss of her throne and much of her property. But in spite of all this, she enjoyed her friends, liked to shop, and loved her music. Her diaries show how she managed all of this, while dealing with the mundane things of life: illness, monetary worries and difficult people. The editor has done a wonderful job of identifying people and places, and my only regret is that her earlier diaries do not survive and the later ones were omitted due to a perceived lack of interest. I'd still like to know more.
