Excerpt from The Description of Greece, Vol. 3 of 3 Attic land: and the Flatasen ses are near the Eleutherenses. But the whole nation of the Boeotians derived its name from Boeotus, who they say was the son of Itonus, and the nymph Melanippe. They add, that Itonus was the son of Am phictyon. Many of their towns too are denominated from: men, but a still greater number from women. The Pla tmenses indeed were, as it appears to me, natives of Bmotia from the first; but they are of opinion that they derived their name from Plataea, the daughter of a river. It is, however, evident that the Platmenses reigned here in ancient times. For all Greece formerly was in subjection to royal authority, and there was no such thing as a democracy to be found among them. But the Plataeenses do not know any thing of their kings except Asopus, and Cithaeron who was prior to asopus: and they say that one of these gave a name to a mountain, and the other to a river.
