The book is fine presentation of the Daedalus'voyage in the years 1791-1794, from a peculiar point of view. The general reflexion is really interesting for it combines both general history, naval details, ethnographic data but also the personnal life and formation of the two principal characters, Hergest and Gooch. It is a fine piece of what we would call "history of attitudes" (in France) but this is true for both polynesian AND english attitudes and way of thinking ... which is great.
