The darkness around us is deep
THE DARKNESS AROUND US IS DEEP Was one of the first book of selected poems by William Stafford that I discovered. I fell in love with his style, his subject matter, the simple ways he presents deep truths. I now own most of his books (except those so rare I'd have to mortgage my house to own them). Poems such as "An Archival Print", begin "God snaps your picture -- don't look away-- this room right now, your fact tilted exactly as it is before you can think or control it...." The poem goes on to speak of what makes your face what it is and ends with: "Go on, keep talking -- Hold it. Don't move. That's you forever." Another poem "Waiting in line," begins: "You the very old. I have come to the edge of your country and looked across, how your eyes warily look into mine when we pass..." speaks of wild youth on the playgrounds, "jittering with the disease of youth. Knowledge can cure them. But not all at once. It will take time," and ends with: "You others, we the very old have a country. A passport costs everything there is." I've underlined and marked so many pages in all his books, they remain intensely personal to me, to say nothing of tremendously inspiring. G. Denham
