Pop Oldson had arrived first, half an hour ahead of time; but Pop had a book to read while waiting. Chipmunk had appeared next, as eager as his namesake after a nut, and Chief Bisco, Johnny Pater, Frisky Perry and Fish Black had straggled in, hot but happy, one at a time. Mr. Batson drove up, smiling, at five minutes of one. "Where's Pokey?" asked Pop. "He'd better be on time for once." "There he comes!" was the answer in chorus. "He's dusting it for fair!" and Pokey, on the double, rounded the corner, clutching his bag under his arm. As he reached the enclosure things began dropping out; he lost time picking them up, and was received, with hand claps and cheers, at two minutes of one. Mr. Batson winked at old Jake, but only waved his hand to Pokey. "How'd you manage it, Pokey?" drawled Johnny Pater.
