Peter Beinart calls himself a "liberal Zionist." He attends synagogue, he believes in the rightness of a homeland for the Jewish people; but he is anguished by the undemocratic policies of right wing American Zionists and the Israeli government's occupation of the West Bank and their denial of equal rights for Palestinians. In this book he traces the development of both groups from their liberal past to their present illiberal policies and beliefs and hopes to wake up younger American Jews.
The right wing Israelis and American Jews dismiss him and many of the younger generation of American Jews either don't care that Israel may no longer be a liberal democracy or don't care about Israel or the Jewish faith at all. He writes clearly and convincingly, but he is writing to an increasingly diminishing audience.
