During the early '90s the U.K.'s Pearl Flapper label assembled and released what came to be known as The Cream Series, a small library of historic jazz and pop compilations devoted to such popular entertainers as Fats Waller, Count Basie, and the Andrews Sisters as well as British entertainers Leslie Hutchinson ("Hutch") and organist Sidney Torch. The Fats Waller entry turned out nicely and would greatly enhance anyone's stash of vintage jazz. Twenty-four selections in no particular order touch upon different stages of his recording career, including the rowdy "Minor Drag" of March 1, 1929, three of Waller's finest piano solos ("Handful of Keys," "Viper's Drag," and the lovely "Clothesline Ballet"), two piano and vocal sides from 1931 that predate his first "Rhythm" band sessions by some three years ("Crazy 'Bout My Baby" and "Draggin' My Heart Around"), more than a few of his best records from the 1930s, two marvelous sides from Fats Waller & His Continental Rhythm ("Music Maestro Please" and "Flat Foot Floogie"), a frantic rendition of "Nagasaki," and one of Waller's very last studio recordings, a magnificent rendering of "Ain't Misbehavin'" that was recorded January 1, 1943. Thomas Waller's portion of The Cream Series fully deserves to be designated as the crème de la crème. ~ arwulf arwulf, Rovi
