Christians are not necessarily kind people, and yet that group more than any other is called to live a life of love. How does that happen? When does the transformation from human to holy take place? Where are the 'new creations' which Christians are said to be? Most importantly, and most crucial for the answers, what is it like to experience God? Written in the form of a letter to her granddaughter, the author dances lightly around such topics by musing on fourteen different names of God which she considers to increase throughout the Bible in their intimacy and revelation of Divine intention. In an unusual approach, she chose certain incidents in her life to illustrate the names. Many of the incidents are remarkable encounters but all are her own personal experience and all were chosen as best describing the character traits associated with the specific Name. Such personal transparency reads more like a diary than a how-to but the experiences only serve to elaborate the process of getting to know the unknowable Living God. Gradual displacement of the 'old self' with the 'new creation' is presented as merely a by-product of his Presence as attention to his Presence becomes a part of life. As both a health practitioner and a spiritual director, the author views the integration of the experience of God into everyday life as foundational and because of that, encourages the reader to keep learning about God as he is, not as they fear him to be.
