The selling house was of assistance to the manufacturer in placing the goods on the market, but the credit which it provided was no less important. The manufacturing enterprises at first involved risks which caused banks to hesitate in granting credit to the new concerns. The selling house, on the contrary, could take a direct part in the management, and with its accumulated capital make advances to the mills, or, what is more important, indorse the notes of the mills so that banks would be willing to accept them.
