No such complete development and discussion of the subject has yet been produced in English at least; and undoubtedly, at present, the object is very imperfectly attained on many of our lines. The Chimney and Flues. If two reservoirs of the same fluid, whether liquid or gaseous, communicate by a tube, while the levels or heights are the same, there must be equilibrium and no motion. But if the height or level be altered in one of the columns, or the relative densities of the columns he changed (by change of temperature or otherwise), then motion will commence, and the flow will be from the higher or denser column toward3 the lower or less dense one. This is the principle of all chimney draught; the external air is one reservoir or column, the air in the chimney stack the other, both communicating at the level of the flues or furnace. The former column may be considered as the total height of the atmosphere, but it i9 more convenient to assume the upper level of both columns or reservoirs, as that of the top of the chimney. Then if H = the height of the column of fluid (air), of the density of the atmosphere due to the difference of pressures of the twc columns, at the level of communication (the flue or furnace), wc have, by the well known expression, the velocity produced--2g being twice the velocity produced by gravity in the first second of...
