Historical and iconographic background on the Orpheus mosaic, as well as thorough documentation of the procedures used in its evaluation, detachment, reinstallation, and cleaning are profiled. Especially noteworthy is the clearly illustrated, step-by-step description of the relatively unusual rolling technique used in lifting the mosaic. Environmental monitoring procedures and the development and evaluation of a shelter for the mosaic are also discussed.
