Rowland brings together the key supporting characters that help Sano Ichiro bring justice to the Shogun's court in 17th Century Japan. Her writing brings the reader into an intimate vantage point to understand the historic Japanese culture and political environment where the ruler is not the Emperor, but the Shogun. Or is the true ruler the second in command within the Shogun's staff that controls not just the government bureaucracy, but the Shogun too.
Read the first three novels first, but set aside sufficient time to let Rowland's story telling key all your senses.
