There's something pleasant about the introductions to these Shakespeare plays as compared to the current Pelican Shakespeare. It's the complete lack of gender-oriented nonsense that has infected academe, and with it the current Pelican version. There is something refreshing about _not_ being told, every time some male dresses as a female or vice versa, that this occurrence somehow relates to 'issues of gender'. Similarly, one does not miss being bombarded with commentary about the alleged homosexual subtexts of the plays, which one cannot help but think are being read into the plays by agenda-driven homosexual editors.
The downside is that this older edition does not note some of the more bawdy Shakespearean puns, although one does question whether the current version goes a bit too far in that department, as some of its notes seem to be overreaching. Still, I recommend the editorial material contained in this older version as a counterpoise to what passes for Shakespearean scholarship in these dark times.
