The first two of the three piano concertos on this release by concerto specialist Howard Shelley are by composer Johann Baptist Cramer. Dating from the early and middle 1790s, they move toward the large dimensions and virtuoso treatment of Hummel and don't sound much like Mozart at all. The Piano Concerto No. 6 in E flat major, Op. 51 is a bit later, dating from around 1812. It shows that, although Cramer as publisher gave the nickname "Emperor" to Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 in E flat major, Op. 73, he was still far from understanding what Beethoven was doing. The listener to all three of these concertos may get a bit tired of hearing tonic and dominant, but the abundant and elegantly integrated passagework testifies to what attracted audiences about Cramer.
