The Christmas Cottage by Davis Bunn is not your typical Christmas story. The book is a slow starter, and I was unable to connect with either of the main characters. I liked Elena, the mayorââ?¬â?¢s precocious ten-year-old daughter who is a math prodigy. While I get that Elena was mature for her age (behavior does not change her physical age), I did not feel that she should be referred to as a woman (several times). There is one line that I felt was unneeded. Dillon gets off his phone after texting with Elena and he says smiling, ââ?¬Å"I was busy flirting with a ten-year-old.ââ?¬Â? The romance between Dillon and Bailey, the townââ?¬â?¢s mayor, is rushed (blink and you will miss it). Dillon and Elena become instant besties (itââ?¬â?¢s strange). I liked the secondary characters. It was great how the townspeople were working together to make the best of a terrible situation. A lot of time is spent talking about the flooding, the enormous amount of work that needs to be done, the lack of housing, quality of the food, and the FEMA grants. I wanted more Christmas. The ending was unsatisfying. The Christmas Cottage addresses the topics of loss, grief, love, redemption, friendship, second chances, and community spirit. It is a nice story, but it is not of the same caliber as this authorââ?¬â?¢s earlier works.
