Not illustrated. 1908 Excerpt: ...in aniline containing aniline hydrochloride, the rate of reaction is proportional to the concentration of the aniline hydrochloride, and increases with the temperature; as is usual in the case of a unimolecular reaction, the velocity is independent of the concentration of the diazoaminobenzene. The transformation is also effected by other aniline salts, such as the dichloroacetate or trichloroacetate, but the rate in this case is slower than when the hydrochloride is used.f Benzenediazoamino-p-toluene becomes converted into diazoaminobenzene and p-toluidine, the former of which then undergoes transformation in accordance with the above rules. The conversion takes place more slowly when the diazogroup is in the ortho-position with respect to the aminogroup. Thus the value of the constant in the case of diazoaminobenzene at 45 is 0-081, whilst the corresponding value for diazoamino-p-toluene is only 0-0095, the solution in each case being semi-normal. CHAPTER XIII AZO-COMPOUNDS The azo-compounds, like the diazo-, contain the group.N2., but with the important difference that, whereas in the latter only one organic radical is united to the.N2. group, the other free linking being combined with an acid radical, thus R.N2. CI J in the former two organic radicals are united to the N2 group, thus R.N2.R. The groups attached to the nitrogen atoms may be either (1) aromatic, (2) aliphatic, or (3) one aromatic and one aliphatic group, giving the mixed azo-compounds. The first representative of this class of compounds was obtained by Mitscherlich by the distillation of nitrobenzene with alcoholic potash. Mitscherlich called the substance' azobenzide', the modern name being of course azobenzene, CgH6. N2. C6H5. He considered that the substance was formed by the replaceme...
