The author of this book is brilliant, and writes well. It is tough to read about her illness, but it is a hopeful book and it might help us all have more understanding and empathy for those with mental illness. Everyone should read this book. A wonderful story of courage, perseverance, humor, and inspiration.

Excellent account of struggles with schizophrenia
I have read many first-hand accounts of struggles with mental illness, and this is one of the best I have encountered. Instead of trying to drive home any particular message (e.g. potential to be successful despite schizophrenia, the horrors of institutional psychaitric treatment), Saks lets her story speak for itself. Well written and engrossing.

exceptional story
Elyn Saks shares her ongoing personal struggle with schizophrenia, demystifyfing the symptoms, providing insightful alternate approaches to therapy, and offering hope for successful management of the disease. For such a heavy subject, her book is exceptional for its candor, accessibility and wry humor.
