In each forward, Erle Stanley Gardner writes an interesting, personal, and pertinant acknowledgement to a person he knows on some level who has made significant contribution(s) to solving crime in the real world. If any reader picks up a mystery by ES Gardner, do not skip over the forward.
I say the same about each book: that it is a shame that they are mostly out-of-print, Each one is gripping, interesting, and unpredictible. While not intellectual, they are a valid and uplifting contribution to reading for relaxation.
