Excerpt from The Canadian Field-Naturalist, 1979, Vol. 93 Following an invitation to members of the Ottawa Literary and Scientific Society, fully forty gentlemen attended the meeting held on the 19th March, 1879. After a lengthy discussion as to the form the organization should take, the Ottawa field-naturalists' Club was born. The quotation above is from the first historical sketch of the Club, taken from the 1880 Annual Report when the Club was fully one year old. Since then there have been several articles describing the many memorable people and events that add up to the varied and fascinating loo-year history of our Club. A series of historical articles is currently being published in Trail Landscape. The aim of this message is not to provide another summary of people or events, but to review instead the ways in which the Club's functional role and objectives have changed over time and to present a personal view of our present role and objectives in terms of future needs. In the beginning, the objective ofthe Club was stated simply as the study ofthe Natural History of this locality. The raison d'etre, however, was more explicit in an 1884 summary.
