Plato describes another wheel, and although its consideration does not reach the metaphysical profundity of the one just dealt with, still the metaphysical element is not wanting, and the whole presents a high cosmical symbolism. At the same time, it is suggestive in connection with other references to wheels among the Greeks; and as showing, as has been suggested, that wheels were possibly not quite unknown to them. This account is given in the vision of Er, in the Republic As Professor Jowett's analysis is more concise, and perhaps more easily understood, it may be preferred to what appears in the text. Er is describing his visit to the other world when he was supposed to be dead, and here is what, amongst other things, he saw. "On 1 B. x. 616, 617. Jowett's Plato, vol. v. p. 333. the eighth day the souls of the pilgrims resumed their journey, and in four days came to a spot whence they looked down upon a line of light, in colour like a rainbow, only brighter and clearer. One day more brought them to the place, and they saw that this was the column of light which binds together the whole universe. The ends of the column were fastened to heaven, and from them hung the distaff of Necessity, on which all the heavenly bodies turned--the hook and spindle were of adamant, and the whorl of a mixed substance. The whorl was in form like a number of boxes fitting into one another with their edges turned upwards, making together a single whorl which was pierced by the spindle. Very Good in Good dust jacket in Good jacket. The pages of this copy are crisp and clean, with no owners' marks; the binding is a little relaxed, but secure and square. The hard cover has some rubbing at the corners and spine ends and a wrinkle at the upper right rear, otherwise excellent. The jacket is faded at the spine and uppers and shows some grayish smudges across the back and some rubbing and a little chipping at corners and spine ends, but is now protected in a clear sleeve.
