Ms. Sherrill writes about the time she spent getting to know the leader of this American-run pseudo-Tibetan Buddhist group and several of the followers. She takes the reader on her own journey to uncover the truth while showing how members allowed themselves to become part of the smoke and mirrors in their mistaken understanding of what is means to become a Buddhist in the Tibetan tradition. This is a book that is both a study of cult activity and a manual for how not to abdicate one's own common sense. As of this writing the organization continues to operate despite challenges brought in by reality checks instead of bank checks. While reading, one hopes for the members to reboot their initial passion for compassion and accept personal responsibilty for their own spiritual direction. It seems they need to become tough enough to ask more questions. The ones that do are the ones who get out. All in all, it's a well-told account and the author lets the reader decide whether it's best to stay or go.
