This is the record of an ancient Guernseyman who has lived on the island from before the Boer War until the 1960s. His view of the world is circumscribed by the sea and the distant coast of France. Yet he has a much deeper perception of events and people than others more "cultured".

My book club read this book, and we had one our of most animated meetings discussing Ebenezer, his view of women, the English, living through the German Occupation, and life in general. We all came away with a better understanding of Guernsey and enjoyed meeting the various characters (though it is certainly clear that the author had a dim view of women -- only a couple of the women characters were likable.)

Love Guernsey? - love this book
This is a novel but reads as a fascinating autobiography of a Guernsey man who lived there through most of the 20th century.
It records in a readable story form the huge changes which took place in that time as they affected the life of a working man, his family and associates.
Anyone who has lived or visited there will be intrigued by the history it tells.
