"It is but reasonable, that upon weighty and important considerations, according to the various exigency of times and occasions, such changes and alterations should be made therein as to those that are in the place of authority should from time to time seem either necessary or expedient." This preface was added in 1662. Even then--the Fifth Revision--they allowed that another might be necessary, and yet we are still afraid to attempt it. I.--Lessons Pboper Foe Holy Days. 1. Why use the Roman terms "Mattins" and " Evensong"? 2. Annunciation of Our Lady. Who is Our Lady? Romanists call the Blesssed Virgin the Queen of Heaven, and also Our Lady, and if Ritualists wish to teach our children the worship of the Virgin, they have only to turn to this page and prove by the Prayer Book that she is truly Our Lady. In Tertullian'f? time (died A. D. 225), only three Holy Days besides the Lord's Day are mentioned, viz., Good Friday, Pasch (Easter) and Pentecost or Whitsunday, and even then, less than two centuries after our Lord's death, Tertullian asks, why, in the face of St. Paul's language as to times and seasons, Pasch is celebrated! These three are also the only ones that were generally observed in Origen's time (ob. A.D. 254), and how many have we now? Jerome, who died in 420, protested against the multiplying of obligatory fasts, the increase of which was not surprising, for even in St. Paul's time the spirit of iniquity had begun to work. The Apostle classed "abstaining from meats" among "doctrines of devils," and said that " bodily exercise profiteth little." II.--The Calendar. 1.
