For the early sixties, Lowndess Biblioglapliers Mazzal, in Henry Bohns able recast, was quite a remarkable production. In view of the present requirements, both of bibliographers and bibliophiles, it is desperately antiquated. First of all, we know much more about English and American books than half a century ago. In various fields, the labours of such eminent men as William Blades, Henry Bradshaw, Gordon Duff, Alfred Pollard, Willian Greg, Thomas J. Wise, and in America, Wilberforce Eanles and Luther S. Livingston, have, so to speak, given to English bibliography the status of an exact science. Even Hazlitts shortcomings should not close our eyes to his painstaking and meritorious efforts. Many elaborate monographs, much detail work of high value by scholars too numerous to be even briefly mentioned, several extensive and accurate catalogues of great collections or important loan exhibitions, lastly the publications of such learned societies as the London Bibliogapltical Society or the New York Goliel Chib, supply the student with a vast quantity of the most valuable material....
