In 1932, more than 20,000 destitute World War One veterans -- many with families -- marched on Washington, DC, demanding payment of a "bonus" to reimburse them for wages they lost while fighting overseas. They encamped in Washington and refused to leave until paid. "The Bonus" tells the tale of Virgil Vance, a young man from the dusty Oklahoma panhandle who goes with his veteran father on an adventurous cross-country trip to Washington, where they find themselves encamped in the biggest "Hooverville" in the United States. Out of the misery, young Virgil falls for a girl from the southwest coal fields of West Virginia, who came with her veteran father. Their love grows slowly as the government begins losing its patience with the Bonus Expeditionary Force.
