N the year 1843, my grandfather received an intimation from one of the city aldermen that a presentation to Christ's Hospital was at his disposal, and in due course I presented myself at the counting-house in Newgate Street, to undergo the usual medical examination. The school authorities are very strict in this preliminary examination, and very properly so, too, for in the squad of fifteen, which passed under the doctor's eye when I was examined, one boy had actually been brought to the school in an advanced stage of scarlet fever! He was, of course, sent back to his parents, and as I never saw the boy afterwards, I am sadly afraid he did not recover in time to make use of the presentation, if indeed he recovered at all. After the examination, our friends were ordered to bring us again the next day for good. I say for good, for it seemed to many a fond parent that an eternity was about to separate them from their darling. One poor boy whose appearance betokened a "Parochial dragging-up," was brought to the school by a veritable "Bumble." His youthful hose, a world too wide for his shrunk shank, told us at once that he was an inferior animal, and so we were not long in making him understand his proper position. With respect to the others, as they came from various strata of the great middle class, and belonged to parents more or less wealthy, --there was nothing particularly striking or outre about their appearance. The boys are sent immediately on admission to the preparatory school at Hertford, and the beadle from that establishment was in attendance to escort us thither.
