This compilation features three of the giants of the tenor saxophone during their prime years in the 1940s. Ben Webster, best known for his work with Duke Ellington, is heard with two separate small groups. On the tracks with trumpeter Idrees Sulieman, clarinetist Tony Scott, pianist Sadik Hakim, guitarist Bill DeArango, and drummer Sid Catlett, Webster digs into two favorites from the Ellington songbook with gusto: "I Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good)" and "The Jeep Is Jumpin'." The sidemen are showcased along with the leader in a pair of Webster originals. The other two Webster selections feature him with almost the same rhythm section, except Al Haig is the pianist. The leader wails on both of these originals. Rarer are the two Coleman Hawkins tracks from a 1943 session, featuring Hawkins with guitarist Jimmy Shirley and a trio of younger musicians, including pianist Ellis Larkins, bassist Oscar Pettiford, and drummer Max Roach. Rarely known as a blues player at this point in his career, his "Blues Changes" indicates otherwise. His take of "Lover, Come Back to Me" is a bit edgier as he shows signs of adapting to the coming of the bop revolution. Lester Young is joined by several fellow veterans of Count Basie's band, Jo Jones, Dicky Wells, and Freddie Green, along with Bill Coleman and Ellis Larkins. The sextet plays a pair of riff tunes by Wells, along with a rollicking take of "I Got Rhythm," already an established warhorse. ~ Ken Dryden, Rovi
