As much an historical novel as it is a "western" this Wade Everett/Will Cook book is a story of how Texas was saved by the cattle drives made to the rail heads in Kansas and Missouri right after the Civil War. Carl Heinz the lead character was a Union soldier but he was also a Texan, and when he didn't like what the army was doing in Texas after the war, he resigned, and decided to do something about it. His solution was make a drive of 6000 head of longhorn steers to Kansas. The conflict of course is, there are people who don't want him to succeed; they want Texas left broke and destitute and vulnerable leaving them in charge.
