The blessing and the curse of Rhino's 2002 collection The Best of Tyrone Davis is its very completeness. It spans from his very first single for the tiny Sack records, "I Tried It Over (And Over Again)," in 1967 to his '90s recordings for Ichiban. This does mean that it's a comprehensive retrospective, tracing the story of his career, but that is a fault because his best material is from the late '60s and early '70s. Although there are certainly fans of Davis' entire career, those classic recordings are what many collectors and fans prefer to hear, and this collection would have been better if it stuck to that. As it stands, this is good for what it is, but there are other collections -- collections without a preponderance of '80s and '90s cuts -- which are better listens. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

Seller's Description:
Near Fine. 081227665029. Disc in excellent condition. Jewel box like new. Full liner notes. 18 tracks. ' Tyrone Davis hit No. 1 on the R&B chart and broke the Pop Top 5 with two slices of incandescent Chicago soul, "Can I Change My Mind" (1968) and "Turn Back the Hands of Time" (1970). Soaked in regret, the singles matched the Mississippi native's deep-blue vocal style with sophisticated arrangements. Included with those classics on the first half of this collection are more examples of the brew, which also produced knockouts like "Turning Point" and the epic "I Had It All the Time." Davis left the indie Dakar/Brunswick firm in the mid-'70s for Columbia; The Best's handful of tracks from this era isn't as dazzling, but does feature three more high-charting records. His return to smaller labels produced '80s hits that brought his blues roots back toward the front of the mix. While "Mind" and "Hands" are the undeniable highlights here, much of the rest points up Davis's many strengths. It's sure to bring welcome attention to this often-unsung star. --Rickey Wright. '
