After the folk revival collapsed around 1965, the Jim Kweskin Jug Band cut another album for Vanguard and hopped over to Reprise. Looking back at the three fine albums the band had made between 1963 and 1967, Vanguard decided to recoup their losses by issuing a best-of collection. The Best of Jim Kweskin culls together 12 songs from Unblushing Brassiness (1963), Jug Band Music (1965), and See Reverse Side for Title (1967) for a good collection that nonetheless suffers in comparison to later, longer collections: Greatest Hits (1990) and Acoustic Swing & Jug (1998). The record kicks off with three cuts from the second album, "Good Time Charlie," "Jug Band Music," and "I'm a Woman," and eventually settles on four cuts from the first and second albums and three from the third. Certain songs like "Christopher Columbus" and "Fishing Blues" from See Reverse Side for Title sound overproduced, as though Kweskin realized folk was no longer "in." The talky "Never Swat a Fly" from the same album doesn't work much better. Perhaps it was the presence of this weak material that led Vanguard to opt for a new collection when it decided to put Kweskin out on CD. While The Best of Jim Kweskin does a fairly good job of representing the band, it is also a product of its time. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr., Rovi
