His descriptions of the landscape and local customs and mores (including billiards, 'one of the great Sardinian occupations') are interspersed with tales of a cast of characters who might have come out of Boccaccio, adding up to a memorable evocation. Time and Tide 'He is a specialist in the vin triste... a delightful offbeat.' Cyril Connolly, Sunday Times 'An exceptionally good book by any standard.' TLS 'A work of art and imagination.' Times

This book is so well written, the descriptions so delicious, it should be devoured slowly and enjoyed thoroughly. I bought it to learn more about Sardinia, and was pleasantly rewarded not only with the author's impression of the place in the 50's, but wondrous descriptions of the land and its inhabitants. If you are looking for a quick read for travel advice, this book is probably not for you. If you love a good sentence and surprising and creative word play, read this book.
