Guy Lombardo's was one of the orchestras giving sweet bands a good name during the '30s and '40s (along with Jimmie Lunceford's), and this multi-decade disc of material hits all of the group's highest points. Difficult as it is to recommend a Lombardo volume that lacks the quintessential perennial ("Auld Lang Syne"), there's over two dozen great instances of sympathetically played music here, from early successes like "The Band Played On" (already over 30 years old when Lombardo recorded it), the equally sentimental "Charmaine," and "It's Love, Love, Love." Yet another excellent compilation from one of the best trad pop reissue labels, Britain's ASV/Living Era. ~ John Bush, Rovi
