An erudite, yet witty history covering the period from the end of James Madison's Presidency to the election of Andrew Jackson. Dangerfield was a keen judge of character with an eye for the telling detail.
Of special interest at the time of this writing (Jan 2010) is his account of the Panic of 1819, and the case of McCulloch v. Maryland. There are many parallels to the current real estate crash. Also covered are the Missouri Compromise(s), the Monroe Doctrine, JQ Adam's treaty negotiations with Spain, the elections of 1824 1828.
This is one of a great series of books published by Harpers in the 1950's-60's edited by Henry Commager and Richard Morris.
