This is the fourth and final installment in a remarkable project that pianist Jack Gibbons undertook. On four CDs, he recorded what could be considered "the complete George Gershwin," re-creating Gershwin's music in chronological order by playing his written piano scores. Gibbons not only brings back Gershwin's writing but his piano style. This set is subtitled "The Hollywood Years" and finds Gibbons performing the "Overture" from Girl Crazy, eight themes from the 1936 Fred Astaire movie Shall We Dance (including "Slap That Bass," "They All Laughed," and "They Can't Take That Away from Me"), one song used in The Show Is On, eight pieces from the 1937 film A Damsel in Distress (best-known are "A Foggy Day" and "Nice Work If You Can Get It") and two songs ("I Was Doing All Right" and "Love Walked In") from the otherwise forgettable the Goldwyn Follies. Jack Gibbons' impressive technique and complete understanding of the music makes this a memorable effort. Recommended, as are the three earlier volumes (which feature Gershwin's songs and extended works of the 1918-1937 period) made available by the British ASV label. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
