Hardcover in blue-grey cloth with red stamped titles on spine, red, white and black illustrated jacket, small 4to. Presumed first with no additional printings indicated. xiii + 160pp. Allen bibliography, portfolio of b/w figures of Whitman; musical scores (by contributor Ned Rorem) on endpapers. NF/G. Book has extremely mild foxing and toning to page edges, extremely mild splaying to rear board toward fore edge with no effect on strong, square binding and hinges. Cloth clean and sharp; pages clean and unmarked (occasional marginal checkmarks erased). Serviceable jacket has moderate abrasion with occasional nicks along front panbel; strong abrasion rear panel with creases, scuffing and tears on rear. Light overall rubbing overall rubbing, to central panel; stronger over edges and hinges; former price marks on upper front flap. Central titles and figures still strong. Jacket in Brodart. Scarce, especially in jacket of any condition.
