Jones is a great scholar and this key work has deservedly found its place on the strategic bookshelf. The work is a tad dry but read in conjunction with, say, Van Creveld's The Art of War and maybe Keegan's Soldiers and the reader will be rewarded with a solid foundation knowledge of military history and theory. The battle maps are plain and quite descriptive but the rest of the illustrations, in my edition anyway, are pretty naff and pointless, hence the need for a Creveld to cross-reference with (if you're a visual thinker that is). All in, not for the casual reader, but a definite for historians, military or otherwise.
