I'm a History teacher in a NYC public school. I ask my students to make up their own political cartoons for historical events we are learning, and this book provides wonderful examples of how it's done!

Political Pictures
There have been several books written over the years about political cartoons, but none more incisively or entertainingly than Donald Dewey's The Art of Ill Will. Most of all, the book is conspicuously clear-eyed, raising basic questions about the influence of editorial cartoonists in American history and coming to a striking conclusion --- very influential in the perpetuation of ethnic and racial stereotypes, very dubiously so in their impact on given political elections. Given the lavish inclusion of cartoons stretching back to the 18th century, the book might seem to be of the coffee table variety. In fact, however, its sophisticated viewpoint and sharp writing make it anything but some tome for supporting a can of beer.
